NEWTON ABBOT

CONGRATULATIONS go to Catherine Pickett and Eilleen Coombes (pictured) on winning the Section Five final of the Minors Women over 55 Pairs. They now go on to the open stage where they will have to travel to play the Section One winners- Braunton or United Services of Barnstaple.

Catherine and Eilleen have done exceptionally well to get this far having played five games just to reach this stage of the competition.

Isobel Burley, Joy Medley and Julia Barnes won their first game in the morning at Culm Vale in the Women's Triples Championship but lost in the afternoon to Kings. Isobel and Julia were also part of the Devon Johns team that will play Gloucestershire at Weston Super Mare, looking to qualify for Leamington Spa.

In the SDL, Newton have lost three on the spin and now have one fixture remaining. The men’s A-team saw their winning run come to an end against Dawlish Marina, the B-team are yet to win but have plenty of time to change this and the C-team are top of their table having played a couple of games more than second.

Newton Abbot’s Dave and Catherine Pickett recently played in a Patrons Game at Bovey Tracey. They are also due to play an upcoming Game at Abbrook Park for the Patrons whilst Dave has a game for Devon Men at Lyme Regis.

KINGSTEIGNTON

JULY 16 saw KBC host teams from Starcross and Shaldon.

They beat Starcross 42-21 (8-0 league points): Ian Westaway 17, R Kryko 11; John Saunders 25, R Foster 10.

Rain held off for the Shaldon clash and it was another home win, 51-24 to KBC (8-0 pts). Martin Redfern 23, N Howells 15; Bill Beech 28, P Nash 9.

Kingsteignton captain Bill Beech said it was a great game against ‘the old enemy’, played in a fine atmosphere.

The following day, a mixed team from Torquay Victoria visited in the Riviera Mixed Triples League. 65-36 to KBC (8-2 pts). Martin Redfern 26, B Burcher 8; John Saunders 30, M Molloy 11; Margaret Sole 9, R Sleeman 17. This was another successful day’s play on the home green, although KBC didn’t have it all their own way.

In conclusion, men’s Captain John Saunders said this was another good win which consolidates second place in the league. The Victoria bowlers were good company on a fine day that stayed dry.

ABBROOK PARK

ABBROOK Parks Ladies SDL1 “A” team at home against Newton Abbot on July 3 had a good win, nine points to one.

H Lannon, P Carwardine and skip E Coombes drew 12-12. P Smith, B Lawrence and skip J Stevens won 17-14. J Stanley, C Wilkinson and skip A Russell won 22-11.

On July 11, this time away at Newton, Abbrook had a close match, losing 2-1 on rinks but winning overall on points.

H Lannon, P Carwardine and skip E Coombes 17-19. P Smith, B Lawrence and J Stevens 16-17. J Stanley, C Wilkinson and skip A Russell wining 13-19.

Abbrooks SDL4 team, away to Paignton on July 3, came away with a creditable eight points.

T Bailey, S Wheeler and skip P Loft won 5-29. H Meager, C Howard and skip L Rollason won 11-20. J Schirn, J Hearne and skip J Barr lost 18-13.

A rearranged home league match resulted in a win against Dawlish Marina plus the men’s over 55 teams both won on July 9, X-team away at Teignmouth Den and the Y-team at home to Dawlish Marina.

Abbrook’s MDL1“A” team hosted Starcross on July 13.

Rink One of Phil Irish, Alan Sanders, Jeff Sharland and skip Kevin Taylor won 18-12.

Rink two of Graham Smith, Phil Stanley, Jim Coker and skip Norrie Wilson won 30-17.

Rink three of John Berry, Geoff Walling, Dave Woods and skip Rob Horrell won 25-19.

Rink four of Ron Milne, Nigel Coombes, Andrew Wilkinson and skip Tom Archer won 24-13.

Abbrook’s second game of the week was at home to Kingsbridge on July 19.

Rink one of Phil Lannon, Tony Sandelance, Phil Stanley and skip Norrie Wilson lost 20-21.

Rink two of Phil Irish, Alan Sanders, Jeff Sharland and skip Kevin Taylor won 33-8.

Rink three of John Berry, Geoff Walling, Dave Woods and skip Rob Horrell lost 13-21.

Rink four of Ron Milne, Nigel Coombes, Andrew Wilkinson and skip Tom Archer won 23-12.

Rob sums up by saying another good win, dropping only four shots out of 14 and gaining 24 points out of a possible 28 over the two games.

BOVEY TRACEY

There were fewer team fixtures for Bovey this week than of late with the men having a disappointing week in their competitions.

At home to Teignmouth Den, the Over 55s X team were able to draw one rink to gain just one league point to their opponents' seven. D Anderson, S Callard, K Lockett 16-19; L Fullbrook, N Fletcher, C Shorland 14-14.

A similar result was achieved by the Y team at Totnes. K Isaaks, D Wraighte, K Breame 10-27; A Chew, P Cridge, R Bailey 17-17.

In the MDL, Bovey had a return fixture at Marldon following their close defeat at home last week. Unfortunately, it wasn't at all close this time, Bovey losing by 51 shots to 99 overall, earning Marldon 14 league points to their nil.

The ladies had a more encouraging result in the SDL at home to Brixham St Mary's where they won two rinks with one drawn to earn nine league points to their opponents' one. Y Stanford, D Simpson, K Callard 23-13; J Ellis, S Breame, S Johnson 19-17; C Towle, D Bailey, H Call 16-16.

Bovey were delighted to welcome a team representing the Devon Patrons for a mixed friendly, resulting in a close win for Bovey by 62 shots to 60 overall.
