KINGSTEIGNTON
ON JUNE 26, in fine weather conditions, a mixed Kingsteignton team welcomed fellow bowlers from Brixham St Marys to play in the Riviera Mixed Triples league. 117-34 to KBC (10-0 pts).
Stephen Hewett 39, J Radford 9; Margaret Sole 55, A Baker 11; John Saunders 23, A Smith 14.
Played on a fine day, this was also a fine day indeed for the home squad bowlers. Despite the one-sided score line the match was played in good spirit with the Brixham bowlers proving to be good sports with plenty of witty banter flowing to and fro.
The Brixham players, in the main, were unable to adjust to the quicker pace and wider line required on delivery compared to the much slower and 'holding' pace needed on their home grass lawn. The summer season is far enough along now where the majority of venues are played on grass, as is Brixham's own lawn back at their base.
This situation, therefore, often creates a lack of practice on the much slicker all-weather carpet weave surface.
Similarly, this problem is reversed for the Kingsteignton bowlers when having to try and adapt on grass lawns.
IPPLEPEN
Many years ago a Bowling Shield trophy was given to Ipplepen Bowling Club in memory of Les Wakelyn from his widow Iris and family. Les had been involved with the club from its inception.
Since then, the annual “Wakelyn Shield competition” has been held, and so on Saturday, June 28, Ipplepen players took to the green once again to play this triples competition with the winners being the team who win their rink with the biggest difference in scores over their opponents.
At the end of the afternoon, club captain Shirley Northwood announced that the winning team, with a 16-shot difference over their opponents, were Carol Tuckett, Brian Russell, and Lynne Sellers (as seen left to right in the photo).
Other bowls matches keeping Ipplepen players busy include all of the club’s summer internal competitions, friendly matches against other clubs, the gents playing in the South Devon Over 55’s league and the ladies playing in the newly formed Ladies Triples Challenge league.
For anyone interested in trying out bowls, or to improve their game, they are now running evening sessions during the summer months every Monday evening starting at 6.30pm. Everyone would be made most welcome.
This is a fun evening for everyone to get together socially and enjoy a game. No formal bowls wear, just come along in casual clothing, but you must still wear flat shoes.
Tuesday and Friday mornings from 9.15am to 12.30 are still the regular roll-up sessions – so again pop down to the clubhouse, where you will be made very welcome. For further information contact Secretary Shirley on 01803 813980.

The pair enjoyed a good day of bowling and a dinner after the event when they were presented with their badges. Well done to both for the achievement.

BUCKFASTLEIGH
Buckfastleigh Bowls Club had a successful Open Day towards the end of May, to promote bowls as a healthy, sociable and fun sport to get involved with.
They signed up nine new members who will be able to bowl for free for a year.
Buckfastleigh is currently lying top of the Rivera Mixed League table at week six following a draw with TBCC (Torbay Country Club).
