BOVEY Tracey AFC went on an incredible 26-game unbeaten run dating back to last season.
They concluded 2024/25 with Ben Gerring at the helm by winning five on the spin and they picked up where they left off in this campaign too.
It couldn’t last forever though and it was Downton FC, who find themselves mid-table in the Wessex Football League, that burst their bubble.
Brett Pitman, a prolific goal scorer in his younger years for AFC Bournemouth, Ipswich Town and Portsmouth to name just a few, notched one of the three goals in Downton’s 3-1 success.
Their FA Vase ambitions may have been extinguished but the Moorlanders have plenty more to look forward to. After all, their 18-game unbeaten run in the league remains intact.
Elsewhere, second-placed in the SW Peninsula League Bridport FC were held to a draw by Torridgeside AFC and Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police dropped to fourth after losing 3-2 away at Ilminster Town.
Taking their spot in third is Newton Abbot Spurs thanks to an emphatic home win, running riot in the second-half.
At The Rec, Connor Marshall’s Spurs and their visitors Torrington AFC scored two apiece before the break, Spurs then adding four more to prevail 6-2.
Further down the table, Teignmouth AFC were beaten by a single goal away at Honiton Town.
Jo Sibal struck for the Teigns but to no avail, a 2-1 scoreline giving them an 11th defeat of their league campaign.
Elsewhere, Crediton United put six past Axminster Town and Ilfracombe Town won 4-0 at home against Bishops Lydeard.
Looking ahead to the weekend and Spurs have a WCP League Cup clash away at Premier West side St. Day AFC whilst in the league, Bovey and Teignmouth visit Torrington and Axminster respectively.
