A COUPLE living in Kingskerswell are all set to celebrate their Platinum wedding anniversary.

On November 1, Nora and David Vallance will have been married for 70 years.

The couple married in 1952 at St James church in Teignmouth, having first set eyes upon one another while walking along a road in the Teign Valley.

‘I was out walking with my friend and David came along walking with his friend’ Nora said.

Nora, who was born in Kent, was living in Teign Village at the time.

‘I lived in Teign Village then and David used to cycle up from Chudleigh Knighton every night to come and see me’ Nora said.

David was working at Newton Abbot power station during this time which, upon its closure in the 1970s, saw the couple relocate to Berkeley in Gloucestershire and Nora end an 18 year long career at Marks and Spencers in Newton Abbot.

‘We always said we would come back as David’s mother lived down here.

‘Our daughter was down here but she didn’t come with us as she was nursing at Torbay.

Nora and David will celebrate their anniversary surrounded by family at the Hare and Hounds.

And so, the question on everyones lips - what is that ever illusive secret to a happy marriage? For Nora it’s simple.

‘Give and take’ Nora said.

David, who was born in Bovey Tracey and grew up in old cottages near the pottery, said: ‘We have always worked together, we have always enjoyed our life and the things we have done, we have wanted to do together.

‘Neither of us has ever had an interest outside of that, I mean I play golf but that is for exercise more than anything else.

An avid golfer, David is a regular at Stover Golf club, originally joining the club in the 1950s.
