Two members of Newton Abbot Somersaults Gymnastics Club secured gold medals at the Regional Team Finals and National Tumbling Qualifiers, held at the Barclaycard Arena, Birmingham.

Ten-year-old Alfie Collier took gold in the men’s 10-12 years level five competition, with nine-year-old James Crab winning the men’s 9-10 years level one event.

In what proved a successful weekend for the Newton Abbot club, eight of their gymnasts qualified for the National Tumbling Finals, which take place at Telford in July – joining Alfie and James are Emily Andrews, Jade Sweatman, Chloe Ware, Ellie Chammings, Shannon Jones and Max Wheeler.

Both Alfie and Max have been picked by British Gymnastics to attend the BG Tumbling Performance Pathway training camps to enhance their development.

They both attended their first training session in Andover, which is the home gym of world champion tumbler Kristof Willerton, who was present at the session.

The pair are due to attend another three sessions where they will continue to be coached by the national tumbling coaches.
