REGIONAL TWO SOUTH WEST

Penzance & Newlyn 42 Teignmouth RFC 20

OFF the back of a bonus point win against second-placed Winscombe last week, Teignmouth RFC travelled to the far South West to face Penzance & Newlyn, writes Chris Gray.

With a strong squad and strong support, travelling hopes were high. 2012 was the last time these two teams met at the Pirates’ ground and on that occasion, Teignmouth returned with the spoils.

It was the visitors who scored the first points courtesy of Jack Mayne’s boot, but this was as good as it got for them in the-first half. The Cornish side scored three tries and a penalty in the face of some ill-discipline, which included a yellow card, taking the score to 22-3.

Teignmouth came out after the break with renewed purpose and energy. Phase after phase of good work eventually put Jack Bowen over the line with a great assist from Luke Atkinson, Mayne duly added the extras. 22-10.

Continued pressure paid dividends once again and this time it was Jordan Hellier crossing in the corner.

There was the scent of another great comeback in the air now for Teignmouth but Penzance & Newlyn had other ideas.

Mistakes returned to their game and another P&N score restored their two-try cushion.

Following a series of pick-and-go moves by the forwards, Teignmouth struck next courtesy of Ryan Knapman.

It wasn’t to be though as, with only five minutes remaining, they conceded two kickable penalties and a 7-point interception try, bringing the final score to 42-20 in favour of Penzance & Newlyn.

Teignmouth backs coach Jack Bond labelled the game as “frustrating”, adding that his side were “good in patches.”

Now sitting 10th in the league, Teignmouth RFC travel to Cullompton for a bottom of the table clash next.
