SOUTH WEST TWO
Teignmouth RFC 23 Okehampton RFC 38
TEIGNMOUTH RFC 1st XV’s tough time in South West Two continued with a 38-23 home defeat by Okehampton RFC.
That’s four defeats in the last five starts for the Teigns, who dropped a spot into the bottom three as Penzance-Newlyn won at Winscombe to go past them.
Although Teignmouth were never ahead in the game, they were not far enough in arrears for most of it for Okehampton to feel comfortable.
And when Teignmouth got within a point in the second half at 19-18 down, it was game on. Then Okehampton hit them with three unanswered tries to close out the game.
Okehampton were always ahead once prop Pat Nash put them there with a try that Luke Simmons converted.
Tries followed for Leon Horn, Rob Fishleigh, Saul Holliday (2) and Brandon Horn. Simmons was four from six off the tee.
It was a second pointless afternoon for Teignmouth, which skipper George Franklin felt they did not deserve.
“It was a really tight, competitive game and very disappointing that we did not take anything away from it,” said Franklin.
“At the 60-minute mark it could've gone either way. Unfortunately, in the final 20, we made far too many errors and some questionable choices, resulting in us barely leaving our own half.
“A tough one to take, but there are still plenty of points still up for grabs.”
Pete Bilham, Jordan Hellier and Alex Ford were the Teignmouth try scorers and Bilham was named as the player of the match for the second week in a row (pictured in possession).
Next up for Teignmouth is a league visit to Wadebridge Camels on Saturday, January 31, whilst Okehampton will head to Tiverton with the pair tied on 51 points apiece at the time of writing.
