Alfie Collier, from Kingsteignton, was part of a five-man team representing the South West at the National NDP finals, which were held at the GMAC Centre, Birmingham, at the weekend.

In September, 11-year-old Alfie – a member of Newton Abbot Gymnastics Club – took gold in the national qualifiers at Falcons Gymnastics Academy.

In the NDP finals, the South West team were up against 10 other regions from across the UK, including Scotland and Wales.

In the club level three category, the team competed in seven disciplines – floor, vault, pommel, high bar, parallel bars, rings and body preparation.

In a field of 55 gymnasts, Alfie finished 19th individually as well as posting the second highest score on the day with his floor routine.

The South West team finished in the silver medal position behind the North West, as well as picking up the Bob Currier Trophy, which is presented to the most successful region.

Alfie was pleased with his performance, especially his floor, vault and body preparation which he scored highly in.

‘It is always tough to go to the National Finals as the standard is very high, so to come away with a silver medal and 19th individually is amazing!’
