LADIES from Teignmouth Golf Club recently went in search of a third consecutive Still Cup crown at Yelverton, taking on a team from Okehampton.
The opening game went Okehampton’s way, with Abby Turner showing all her experience and determination to beat Teignmouth youngster Belle Tarr 5&3.
Teignmouth soon hit back with Vicky Holloway producing an impressive 6&5 victory over Amanda Leonard. Two more Teignmouth wins followed, with Lorna Elliott beating Penny Deakin 6&4 and Susie Carr overcoming Frances Harbron 3&2.
With three games already in the bag, Teignmouth needed just one more point to secure the trophy and Kendal Bradley duly delivered, beating Sue Stanbury 5&3 to put the title safely back in Teignmouth hands. Almost simultaneously, Okehampton picked up another point with Tracey Chandler beating Hannah Reynolds 1-up.
That left just Hannah Stephens and Petra Byatt still out on the course. Hannah had fought back brilliantly from 2-down at the halfway point to be 1-up through 16, but with the overall result already decided the match was called in.
The Teignmouth women completed a hat-trick of Still Cup victories with Team Captain Amanda Hall once again receiving the trophy – making it three winning years in a row for Amanda and her team. Okehampton’s Team Captain Frances Harbron was presented with the runner-up trophy, the E. Young Bowl.
Next up on the day was the President’s Trophy, the handicap matchplay competition for players with a Handicap Index up to 21.4, and this one developed into a real thriller between local rivals Teignmouth and Dainton Park.
Teignmouth made the perfect start with Rosie Arnold beating Jo Fisher 5&4, followed by Sarah Plunkett defeating Sally Clements 2-up. Then Dainton Park got themselves on the scoreboard when Karen Cole beat Amanda Coleridge 4&3, leaving plenty still to play for.
The excitement really started to build as games three and four reached the 18th hole all-square.
News from around the course suggested Dainton Park were ahead in games six and seven, meaning Teignmouth really needed to find a way to win both matches still going down the extra holes. And find a way they did.
Sam Rogers secured a crucial win on the 20th hole after the third game had been all square after 18 and 19, Dainton Park’s Amanda Milverton narrowly missing out.
Then came another dramatic finish in game four. Both players hit good tee shots and Dainton Park’s Tina Scanlan chipped beautifully close to the pin.
But Teignmouth’s Lynne Blandford was not to be outdone, holding her nerve to hole a 30-foot putt for a two and secure the match and the overall victory for Teignmouth.
The final two games were called in, although it was a shame to interrupt what were clearly two terrific battles with Teignmouth’s Liz Tough and Sue Roper both fighting back to get their matches all square against Debbie Parsons and Louise Darke.
Teignmouth captain Sam Rogers proudly collected the lovely President's ‘Maud’ Trophy on behalf of her team. Dainton captain Chrissie Cornish received the runner-up trophy for her team.
A finals day of this scale takes a huge amount of work behind the scenes and there are plenty of people who deserve a very big thank you, from those at Yelverton to the DevonGolf team and matchday referees.
