A NEW-look Teignmouth side slid to a 62-7 defeat away from home to South West Two newcomers Penzance-Newlyn.

The Teigns had five players making their first-team debuts – four of them in their teens – and were light in a couple of berths due to injuries.

Penzance took a fourth-minute lead and by half time the score board read 24-7 in their favour. Teignmouth’s points were a Faolan Lidstone try that Kai Clayton converted.

Although the Teigns kept the Pirates out for the first 15 minutes after the break, they were swamped by five more tries in what was left of the match. Three of those tries were scored while Teignmouth were a man down with Dan Woolnough in the sin bin.

Flank forward Jake Allison was nominated as Teignmouth’s man of the match.

Teignmouth are on the road again this Saturday to Nailsea & Backwell, who have arrived from the Western Counties North Division.

NEWTON Abbot dipped to a 59-28 defeat away to Torquay Athletic in their first Western Counties West outing of the season.

The All Whites came from behind to lead 21-19 at half time but were heavily outscored in the second session.

Although it looks like a pasting, Newton’s director of rugby Rory Blackmore felt the final score flattered the Tics.

“The scoreline did not really reflect the game,” said Blackmore.

“Injuries in the first half didn’t help us – we lost Sam Forey on the flank and Toby Pascoe at full-back – but we were ahead at half time.

“When we moved the ball at speed we looked threatening. Torquay trundled up the middle, which they do so well, and wore us down.”

Blackmore said sustaining a yellow card and coughing up a couple of tries in quick succession handed Torquay momentum during the second half.

Blackmore added: “We weren’t terrible but it was a 40-minute performance which we need to turn into 70.”

Torquay’s try scorers were: Craig Withers, Matt Allanson, Lewis Harben (2), Billy Harker, Joel Armitage, Callum Crocker, Matt Butler and Shane Wakeham. Ben Whalley was six from nine off the tee.

Ollie Goulden, Dan Beer, Jack Sealey and Tom Arnold dotted down for the All Whites. Jay Barnes converted all four.

Newton Abbot are back at Rackerhayes this Saturday for the visit of Truro.

ALEX Doyle and Kenze McGloughlin both scored try hat-tricks for New Cross in their 53-19 win over Devon Two North-East newcomers Bideford Quins.

The Quins, newly arrived from Merit Table rugby, were gritty in defence and made life tough for New Cross at close quarters in the first half.

Patience, grit and rugby intelligence worked in New Cross’s favour after the break as they racked-up try after try against their hosts.

“This is a great improvement on Torquay last week, when we stubbornly continued getting flattened, and lost the game,” said coach Jerry Wotton.

Doyle in the centre and McGloughlin on the wing finished with three tries each. New captain Harry Symes, Ben Pythian and Rob Pedrick scored three between them. Ryan Wotton knocked over four conversions.

Player of the match went to man of many roles Ash Ansermoz, who added playing flanker to his rugby CV, which already includes outings on the wing, in the centre, at fly-half and across the front row.
