CRICKET star Chris Gayle is heading back to South Devon CC this summer for a charity T20 game.

West Indian all-rounder Gayle (left) delighted a huge crowd at the Newton Abbot club’s ground last year when he appeared from a hospitality tent unannounced to play a cameo role in a benefit game for Somerset’s Peter Trego.

Video of the game and Gayle’s contribution became an internet sensation and put South Devon CC on the world cricket map.

At the time Gayle was still basking in the glory of his record-breaking contribution in the recent World Cup – a double-hundred against Zimbabwe in Canberra.

Gayle isn’t scheduled to play in this summer’s game, which is between a Professional Jockeys’ XI and a Sports Celebrity XI. He wasn’t supposed to appear last summer either!

Gayle is one of two VIP guests who will be at the game. The other is recently retired champion jump jockey Sir A P McCoy.

The game on June 12 is being played to raise money for the Injured Jockeys’ Fund, the Tom Maynard Trust and youth cricket at South Devon CC.

The Professional Jockeys’ XI, sponsored by Coral, will be captained by Tom Scudamore.

Keith Parsons, the former Somerset all-rounder, is skippering the Sports Celebrity XI, which is supported by Arburthnot Latham.

Players already confirmed include Peter Scudamore, Michael Scudamore, Richard Johnson, Sam Twiston-Davies, Simon Danielli, David Pipe, James Simpson-Daniel, Nick Luck, Joe Tizzard, Warren Greatrex, Keith Parsons, ex England U19 pacer Mike Parsons and former England fast bowler Andy Caddick.

A sportsmans’ dinner will be held after the match at nearby Newton Abbot Racecourse.
