I am struggling to work out who actually has confidence in our MP, Anne Marie Morris.

It certainly isn’t the Conservative Party, who have denied her the whip for an indefinite period following her racist outburst.

It can’t be the thousands of ordinary, decent Conservative voters who have been hugely embarrassed by her antics, or the thousands of Liberal Democrat and Labour Party members who opposed her at the last election.

The local Conservative Party have not seen fit to deselect her as a Tory MP – something that I suspect may come back to haunt them in the longer term.

So who exactly thinks she is a worthwhile representative for the Newton Abbot constituency?

It is about time she went.

Most of us would welcome her having the decency to leave of her own accord rather than seeing her being deselected by the local party – but it is clear that she has lost the confidence of the national party and her supporters.

The Labour Party would welcome the opportunity to contest the seat in a by-election and would be seeking to improve on the remarkable performance of James Osben in the last poll, putting people before profit and concentrating on our vital public services, health, transport and education.

Whatever the result, we would at least gain a Member of Parliament who has a clear mandate and the confidence of the electorate.

I hope that local people will join with us in seeking to replace such an embarrassing representative with someone more worthwhile.
