SERVICE men and women who fought in the Falklands War have been remembered at a special service in Dawlish.

On Sunday morning representatives of the services and town council gathered at the town’s war memorial to pay their respects in a simple service.

A far cry from the better attended Remembrance Day services, this was a more intimate affair. Ex Royal Navy man Richard Hayward said: ‘This was something we’d planned to do a few months ago but today was the first opportunity to hold the service.’

Richard, branch chairman of the Royal British Legion in Dawlish and Cath Evans, club chairman laid a wreath alongside a representative from the Army.

Cllr Lisa Mayne, Dawlish mayor, right, laid a wreath on behalf of the town council. Richard has once again been fundraising on behalf of the RBL, designing and selling Poppy Appeal badges unique to the town.

He’s had 1,000 badges made and so far has sold nearly half of them. They are on sale around the town at the RBL club, Presents of Dawlish, Puzzles, Home Kitchen, Coast to Coast and Lees Bar in Dawlish Warren.

The RBL will be attending the Remembrance services across Teignbridge in November, and before that will be marking the contribution of the Merchant Navy at a service on September 3.
