THE appearance of red crosses painted on road junctions in Exminster has divided opinion in the village.

Almost all the white junction markings along the main road, a roundabout and a pedestrian crossing have been painted with a red cross, symbolising the St George cross.

The markings have sparked a huge response with some agreeing they are patriotic but others saying they are divisive.

The painting has been reported as graffiti to the local authority but comes as similar incidents have taken place across Devon as a protest against asylum seekers staying in UK hotels.

More than 100 responses, for and against, were posted on the village’s social media.

One commented: ‘Sadly the England flag has become a symbol of divisive politics which hopefully is not representative of this village.’
