NEWTON Abbot MP Anne Marie Morris has ‘no plans’ to comment on the latest calls for a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The MP lost the Conservative party whip late last year in response to voting with the opposition on removing VAT from energy bills.

She had written a letter to Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 Committee, in December expressing her ‘no confidence’ in the Prime Minister.

But at the time, as the Conservative whip had been withdrawn, her letter did not count towards the total amount required to reach the 54 threshold to trigger a vote on the Prime Minister’s future.

Mrs Morris has now had the whip restored since the new session of parliament on May 12.

A spokesman for Ms Morris said the original letter had ‘never been withdrawn’.

He added: ‘With regard to the restoration of the Conservative Party whip and letters being submitted, Anne Marie has no plans to make any further comment at this stage.’

In January, she commented on the then so-called ‘Partygate’ issues which have now been investigated.

However, at that time, she said: ‘Given my increasing displeasure with the ongoing events in the latter part of 2021, I submitted a letter of no confidence in the Prime Minister to Sir Graham Brady before Christmas.’

She also said then: ‘Fundamentally the country needs strong leadership and a clear direction to get back on its feet post-pandemic.

‘I remain strongly committed to Conservative principles and supporting a Conservative government that acts in the best interests of my constituents in Teignbridge as well as the wider country.’

Now only Sir Graham, chairman of the committee of backbenchers, knows the exact number of no confidence letters and he is not expected to say anything until the 54 threshold has been reached.

Back in January, Mrs Morris said she had become ‘increasingly concerned’ with some of the directions taken by Government with regard to the Covid policies.
