TWO towns in Teignbridge have been named among the top ten best places to live in Devon.

Ashburton and Moretonhampstead made the 2025 Muddy Stiletto Awards’ ‘Best Places to Live in Devon’ list, coming seventh and eighth respectively.

Bampton came number one, with Modbury taking tenth place.

Only one of Devon’s two cities, Exeter, made the list, with the Ocean City of Plymouth absent.

Ashburton’s independent vibe, community strength and quaint architecture saw the moorland town once gain make Muddy’s list.

‘It has the feel of a town that’s loved with always lots going on, and a creative edge that pervades everything from its eateries to an active arts and culture scene’, Muddy Stilettos said of Ashburton.

‘That it feels so rural, while being brilliantly connected is a huge strength, although it’s one for those who prefer countryside walks to beaches and paddleboarding’, the organisation added.

Deeper on Dartmoor, we come to Moretonhampstead, of which the Muddy Stilettos said it was a ‘small but perfectly formed town’.

‘This small but perfectly formed town of around 1500 on the edge of Dartmoor, brims with useful stores, three good pubs and a hotel – there’s even a Post Office – and loads of amenities which the invested townsfolk keep going strong’, the organisation said.

‘While here’s a hub for walkers and cyclists who are just passing through, the farming families who have made a home here for centuries, along with the creatives and professionals, span the generations, making for a healthy mix’, the organisation added.

The remaining places in Devon to make the list were: Sidmouth, Appledore, Topsham, Tavistock and Dartington.
