RESIDENTS in Exminster are being warned to be on the look out for highly invasive Japanese Knotweed.

The parish council has announced that some of the prolific plant has been discovered on some of its land.

It is being treated professionally, following recognised guidelines.

Japanese Knotweed is so invasive it can cause damage to property and spreads very quickly.

A parish council spokesman said: ‘It should not be just pulled out of the ground as this stimulates growth and does not get rid of it.

‘The plant is spread by fragments carried on peoples’ clothes or by water and very easily takes root.’

The council is advising residents and landowners who have property that borders the Berry Brook.,, running from the top of Days Pottles Lane down through Crockwells Meadow and into the marshes, to check their property for any sign of Knotweed.

It dies down in the winter but will resurface in the spring.

If any Knotweed is found, it is strongly recommended that a professional company that deals with this problem is contacted for advice.
