A TEIGNMOUTH opticians is claiming the world record for the longest time carrying out back to back eye tests.

Staff at Specsavers, Bank Street, managed 105 examinations in 33hrs 33mins 33secs.

'As part of our campaign to raise awareness of the importance of eye care and tests, we came up with the idea of being the first opticians to test eyes around the clock,' explained Simon Simmons, an optometrist and director of the store.

'It is a great feeling to have achieved the goal, and we are looking forward to our efforts being officially recognised by the World Records Academy.

'I would like to thank the local community and all the staff at the store, because we could not have done it without their support.'

The feat also raised more than £2,000 for Vision Aid Overseas which provides eye care to third world countries.

The mayor of Teignmouth, Cllr David Cox, had the first eye test, and he declared: 'Well done to them all – it was a splendid effort.

'I would urge everybody to have regular examinations, because it can also show up other health problems at an early stage.'
