AN elderly man has sustained leg injuries after falling while inside St Leonards clock tower in Newton Abbot this afternoon, Wednesday, July 23.

The 84-year-old, who is visiting the town while on holiday, was descending from the top level of the iconic landmark when his leg gave way.

Emergency services, including a specialist ambulance team, attended the scene and administered pain relief.

The man was successfully extracted at around 3pm and has been taken to hospital, the Mid-Devon Advertiser can confirm.

Between May and September, St Leonards is open to the public every Wednesday.

It is also open on some Saturdays, usually when there is an event on in the town centre.
