DOG owners are being urged to take care along the coast after a dog had to be rescued from a ledge in Shaldon.

Torbay coastguard team and colleagues from Dawlish coastguards were called in when the young dog became trapped.

A passing member of Teignmouth lifeboat crew managed to stop a member of the public putting themselves in danged trying to save the stricken dog and made sure coastguard teams were alerted.

A spokesman for Torbay coastguards said: ‘We were able to reach the young dog and lead her to safety.

‘This was our second tasking to a dog stuck on a ledge in as many days.

‘Accidents will always happen but we urge dog walkers to take note of advice on keeping pets safe.’

April is National Pet Month and the Coastguard Agency has issued some safety tips for dog owners while enjoying the coast.

Dogs are easily distracted by all the exciting sounds and smells on a coastal walk and may run towards the cliff edge, so it is important they are kept on a lead at all times.

If they get stuck on a ledge, in mud or swept out to sea, don’t go after them.

Most dogs make it back safely.

If someone is in danger trying to reach a dog call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
