John Potts, of Kingsdown Crescent, Dawlish, a member of Teign Valley Pedal Bashers, writes:
Chris Dunn, in his column last week, makes an excellent case for the Teign estuary cycle-pedestrian track from Teignmouth to Kingsteignton.
He is right that the priority should be between urban areas rather than the countryside, as they will be more heavily used by commuters and leisure cyclists, especially families with children.
But, as I understand it, the funding for this route, which could rival the famous Camel Trail in Cornwall, is not the main issue holding up its implementation.
The county council, Teignbridge and Sustrans, the national cycling charity, all want it to happen, but the project is being delayed by a couple of landowners in the Bishopsteignton area who do not like the proposed route. The alternative they favour would cost millions more and kill it stone dead.
Hopefully, they will do a deal for the great good of the community, or the county council will go for a compulsory purchase order. We have been waiting for more than a decade.
This trail would be one of the most popular in the area, attracting locals and holidaymakers all the year around, and I am surprised that local traders, who stand to receive a significant boost in visitors, are not being more vocal in their support, along with Teignmouth, Shaldon and Bishopsteignton councils.
