ULTRA marathon runner Kevin Carr will receive a new special award for his round-the-world achievement at the Teignbridge Sports Personality Awards tonight.

The award will honour the Ilsington athlete, who became the fastest man to run 16,300 miles around the world earlier this year.

The ceremony, at the Langstone Cliff Hotel, Dawlish Warren, is in association with Kitsons Solicitors and supported by the Mid-Devon Advertiser and Breeze FM. It recognise athletes, volunteers, sports teams, committee members, coaches, and community champions from all areas of the community.

Teignbridge Council leader Cllr Jeremy Christophers will open the gala and there’ll be a raffle in aid of the council’s chairman’s charity, which this year is the Helen Foundation. Ben Moseby, from Breeze FM, will present tonight’s event.

Cllr Christophers said: ‘Every year I am humbled by the level of commitment demonstrated by people towards their chosen sport and blown away by the standard of talent we have here.

‘For Teignbridge, it’s about recognising the talent pool we have on our doorstep and thanking them for what they do.

Cllr George Gribble added: ‘We’re really looking forward to this year’s event. There have been so many outstanding nominees in every area of sport it’s made our job as judges even more difficult than usual.

‘This year some new awards have been created to honour community sports facilities, projects and heroes.

‘The special awards recognise the outstanding commitment by Dartmoor School Sports Partnership in getting thousands of children active throughout 2015, and another award is for ultra marathon runner Kevin Carr.

‘The Rob Breslan Legacy Award recognises the life of a man who inspired many through his dedication to football at Ipplepen AFC and tragically passed away in August. We are also doing a feature on the good work of Chudleigh Sports Centre’s volunteers in pulling four clubs together to improve their sporting facilities for the local community.

‘I always find the evening inspiring and touching. I am sure this year will be another one to remember.’
