VE Day events in Dawlish came to a poignant conclusion with the lighting of a symbolic beacon on the Lawn.

The evening’s events drew to a close a day of celebrations to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe.

New Mayor of Dawlish Cllr Anthony James, who had been sworn into office the day before, took on his first duties.

To start the day, his first official engagement, along with his deputy Cllr Lynda Littlewood, was the flag raising ceremony on the Lawn on a flag pole which had been moved just days before due to work by South West Water.

The morning’s ceremony featured the proclamation read by Town Crier Bob Graham, supported by his escort Heather and included a reflective moment led by Revd Linda Cronin of St Gregory’s Church.

Shops in the town had been flying Union flags for several days ahead of the day.

The Town Crier delivered the official VE Day 80 tribute, echoing across the nation in honour of the bravery, resilience, and sacrifice of the wartime generation

Following the tribute, another blessing was given by Revd. Cronin, offering a moment of reflection and unity for all.
