Young photographers are invited to enter a free competition to have their photos in an exhibition at the Devon Guild of Craftsmen, and go on to win further prizes.

The competition, by the Devon Guild in Bovey Tracey, is open to 14 to 21-year-olds living in the South West. Three individual works or a triptych of works on ‘creation’ can be entered by December 31. Thirty entrants will be selected to have their work shown at the Methods Making Madness exhibition next May, including having their work printed and mounted for free.

A spokesperson for the Guild said: ‘We’re offering young photographers a chance to step into the exhibiting world with a competition to inspire, educate and astound.

‘As a young photographer it’s really important to start gaining exposure as soon as possible. The more people who see your work, the more likely you will be to gain a following and get work.

‘During the exhibition around 15,000 people will come through the Devon Guild so it is an incredible opportunity to have your work seen.’

Entrants are asked to capture the essence and process of creation - by a maker, artist, or an element of nature.

The spokesperson added: ‘It could be the mess, the mistakes or the progression to perfection… it’s your interpretation that counts. There are no guidelines to what it can be, we want you to open your imagination.’

The exhibition in May is being organised and curated by three young people, Emily Cartwright, Sam Fabian-Miller, and Lauren Wiig-Aspland, and supported by Devon Guild curatorial staff.

During the exhibition the public will be asked to vote for their top three pieces on display. The prizes so far include a solo exhibition space in the Devon Guild and a two-hour master class in portrait or travel photography with photojournalist Suzy Bennett.
