A DARTMOOR-based charity celebrating 25 years has announced it wants to plant a further ten million trees over the coming years.
Against the impressive backdrop of Buckfast Abbey, more than 100 guests, made up of corporate partners, landowners, collaborators, funders and volunteers, turned out for afternoon tea to celebrate Moor Trees’ quarter of a century milestone.
To date, the charity has planted close to 200,000 trees over a combined area of 167 hectares, with 95,000 seedlings and saplings growing in its nurseries.
Moor Trees’ Chairman, Jenny Isaac, said: ‘It is essential that we each inspire people to take action now to ensure a more nature-rich Dartmoor.
‘Moor Trees wants to see a further ten million trees take root in the next 25 years and we’re doing this for nature, for children and young people who are growing up in a world with less and less wildlife.
‘Each woodland recreated is a legacy to be proud of.
‘We can all, individually and together, make a difference now to help mitigate the impacts of the climate emergency and the devastating loss of biodiversity’.
To mark the milestone, Moor Trees has launched its ‘10 Million Trees Club’, the aim of which is to unite businesses that share a passion for woodland creation and nature recovery on Dartmoor.
And there are several other ways to support Moor Trees, including by joining a regular volunteering day; introducing Moor Trees to landowners who are interested in creating new woodlands or expand existing ones; taking part in a ‘Wild Work Day’ to get stuck in and find out more about the day-to-day work at the charity’s Community Tree Nursery and encouraging others to support Moor Trees by raising awareness of its tree dedication scheme or becoming a regular donor.
