AN animal rescue charity in Devon is urging people to take extra care of hedgehogs during the breeding season.
ELM Wildlife, based at Seale Hayne, Newton Abbot, says hoglets are commonly born between May and September and can easily be disturbed during gardening and outdoor work.
The charity is asking the public to check carefully before strimming, mowing, digging, or moving piles of leaves, wood, log piles, sheds or outbuildings.
It also advises leaving small gaps in fences and walls to allow hedgehogs to move safely, and provide shallow dishes of fresh water and suitable food.
Anyone who finds a lone or injured hoglet is being urged to contact a local wildlife rescue for advice.
ELM Wildlife can be contacted on 07971 276658.
