EFFORTS to help the refugee crisis are continuing in Newton Abbot with a fundraising coffee morning.

The event has been organised at The Avenue Church by the NewtonAid refugee crisis group which was set up several weeks ago to try to assist the increasing crisis in both Calais and Syria.

Initially the call was for donations of clothing, bedding and supplies.

Now the priority has changed with organisers now raising cash for aid workers to use on the ground.

The coffee morning takes place on Saturday, October 31 from 10am to noon and anyone is welcome.

Cllr Gordon Hook, who was one of the originators of the group, explained: ‘Cash rather than clothing is now the order of the day.

‘Far too much jumble appears to have been collected by too many well-meaning organisations, but problems of distribution are now arising.

‘I would love to think various organisations would stage an event for the cause as cash can be used where it is most needed by specialist aid workers already in place.

‘Cash injected in this way is a great help to the refugees and also to the local economy.’
