A FUNDRAISER to set up a hub in Newton Abbot providing sign-posting, mentoring and opportunities for veterans, serving personnel and their families has been launched.

Dubbed OpCwtch, the campaign is being spearheaded by Amanda Richards, Kris Hanson and Richard Woods.

‘There is a very big hole from being on the streets to actually moving in somewhere - once you’ve got a house and everything, people are there to actually physically help you - it’s the bit in-between, not knowing where to go, what benefits you’re entitled too and so on’, said Richard, who is himself a veteran.

‘So that’s how this has come about’, Richard added.

Described as a ‘one-stop shop of support’ by Kris, the proposed hub would offer walk-in services, as well as practical support such as showering and laundry facilities, lockers, computers, post office box and much more besides.

It would serve Newton Abbot and the surrounding area, including Torbay; the area is without a dedicated hub aimed at veterans, with the closest facilities being with Plymouth or Exeter.

As such, the trio of Amanda, Kris and Richard are hoping to launch the first for the area, with the proposed hub to be located somewhere in Newton Abbot.
