Investment in key building sites by Teignbridge Council is helping to bring a new lease of life to Teignmouth seafront.

Leases for council-owned assets have been agreed with two new food and drink businesses.

The well-established Shellfish Pot has relocated and brought a taste of the sea to the former ambulance building. The new venture, ‘The Wave: Art, Food, Views’ has allowed owners John and Liz McHugh to have permanent takeaway premises offering a wide variety of healthy options along with outdoor seating and parasols. A mini gallery has also been created, allowing Liz, a local artist, to display more of her art work of local scenes.

Exciting plans to open a new business on the site of a former public shelter on Teignmouth seafront, known locally as the Goldfish Bowl, are also afoot with South Devon’s Pierhead Cafes & Bars Ltd planning to open a new bar and cafe this summer.

Inspired by beach bars from around the world, it will provide a relaxed, informal seafront atmosphere for people to enjoy. It is planned the venue will support local events and groups, providing a venue that will bring the building to life through the day and evening. The new venture is led by four local families from Teignmouth who are excited to bring a new offering to their home town.

Teignbridge Council’s portfolio holder for corporate resources, which includes assets and estates and regeneration, Cllr Alan Connett, said: ‘Through its council strategy, Teignbridge is committed to doing what it can to encourage new businesses to move to the district and enable established ones to grow.

‘This is a good example of words in action. It fits well with our aim of making our places even more attractive so people make it a place to visit and stay longer, but also makes sure we and our communities get the best use out of council buildings.’

There are a number of business opportunities available across the district. Visit www.teignbridge.gov.uk/lettings for more information.
