AN INQUEST has opened into the death of a Newton Abbot-based businessman who died after a road accident near the town’s Penn Inn roundabout. Jerry Daniell, 53, a company director of Park Hill Road, Torquay, suffered a fatal head injury in the collision with a car on the Shaldon Road outside Milber Service Station on September 22. He died the following day at Torbay Hospital. Formal identity was carried out by his partner Catherine Brophy. The medical cause of death won’t be officially confirmed until the results of toxicology and histology tests are known. Coroner’s officer Stephanie Teague said at yesterday's opening inquest in Torquay: ‘Jerry was riding his motorcycle along Shaldon Road in Newton Abbot heading towards the Penn Inn roundabout when a motor vehicle pulled out, turning right from Milber garage forecourt directly into Jerry’s path. ‘As a result Jerry was thrown from his motorcycle. He was conveyed to Torbay Hospital where it was found he had suffered an unsurvivable head injury and sadly died on September 23.’ The opening inquest heard that police inquiries into the accident were continuing. They have requested retention of the body for a further 28 days. A full inquest will be held later. A man is due to be appear before magistrates in Torquay later this month in connection with the accident.
