VOLUNTEERS from Ashburton-based Dartmoor search and rescue were called in to help with the search for a man in Torbay. The team joined police, police dog units and Torbay coastguards in the hunt for the 42-year-old who had been missing for some time on Monday. A major air and land search was launched for the man who was eventually found just after 11pm at Berry Head in Brixham. The man had been in sporadic phone contact with the emergency services who were increasingly concerned for his welfare as the hours went on. A helicopter search was initially over Torquay while the man had been phoning the emergency services then breaking off calls before it could be established where he was. Earlier an alert had been issued for the public to be on the lookout for the 42-year-old. A spokesman for Dartmoor search and rescue team said: ‘The team was called out to search for a vulnerable man who had gone missing earlier in the day and police were concerned for his welfare. ‘Our team of volunteers search scrubland and park areas around the Willows and Broomhill Way retail parks. ‘The police have been in sporadic contact with the individual throughout the evening before he terminated calls. ‘Our teams were stood down about 10pm.’ A police spokesman later confirmed: ‘The man was safely located at Berry Head car park and was taken to hospital by ambulance with possible hypothermia and some injuries.’ Torbay coastguard said: ‘Search teams were deployed across the headland and in the north and south forts. ‘After a short period, the missing person made themselves known to the coastguard officers and police officers who were at the car park. ‘Immediate first aid was given while an ambulance was directed to the car park to take the casualty to hospital.’
