REGIONAL TWO SOUTH WEST
Teignmouth RFC 40 Wellington 12
WITH visitors Wellington and home side Teignmouth both languishing at the bottom of the league, Saturday’s encounter was important to both sides to find some winning form.
Teignmouth opened the account with an early score by Jack Mayne after a tap-and-go penalty in the Wellington 22. Converting his own try, he put the home side ahead 7-0 after only six minutes.
Wellington responded well but it was the hosts who scored next, Mayne pulling the strings and James Wright crossing under the posts.
After 30 minutes, Teignmouth had a third try to celebrate, Cam Johns firing over and Mayne slotting a third successful conversion for a 21-point lead.
If the home supporters expected the floodgates to open though, they were wrong. There was no further scoring in the first-half.
Very soon after the break, Teignmouth were in the points again, Pete Parsons scoring in the corner for a guaranteed bonus point, Mayne was unable to add the extras this time.
20 minutes of good rugby by both sides followed with some great scrummaging from Wellington but unfortunate injuries and a yellow card did not help their cause. Following a rolling maul at the lineout, the Teignmouth backs unleashed Hellier who drew the defence before putting Pitman over the line. Mayne again added the extras, 33-0.
Wellington responded with some good attacking play, scoring two tries in quick succession to put 12 points to their name on their travels.
Teignmouth had the final say on the Bitton Park turf, fullback Jordan Hellier with the last try of the game, accompanied by another sharp Mayne conversion.
A 40-12 win proved a much-needed one for Teignmouth, who are up to ninth as a result, whilst Wellington have a mountain to climb.
