NEWTON Abbot All Whites’ Club XV were outscored seven tries to three by the Exiles in the traditional Boxing Day fixture.

Club chairman Keith MacLean put together a strong Exiles side that featured the three Scott brothers – Tom, Ben and James – who took the field alongside brothers, Josh and Alex Gale, who propped the scrum, and Barnaby and Felix Dunscombe.

The Exiles opened up a 20-nil half-time lead thanks to a try from full-back Harry Allen, who was put in after a strong run from Corey Whane.

Winger Whane then grabbed a couple for himself, wrapped around a touchdown from fly-half Ben Scott.

Winger Jake Monnington got one back for the Club XV, but the Exiles pulled further ahead with Allen crossing for his second before Louie Griffiths scored a Connor Keal converted try.

Jon Lacey responded for Newton. However, his score was more than cancelled out by the Exiles’ number 8 Tom Bottoms, who banked a self-converted try.

Martin Browne, who captained the Club XV from centre, concluded an entertaining match with his side’s third touchdown.

Tomorrow, it’s back to the serious stuff with the resumption of National Three South and West action.

At the halfway point of the campaign, Newton are in tenth place having won only four of their 13 matches. However, the nine bonus points gleaned along the way keeps them seven points above the relegation trio, who are headed by Old Centralians who visit for a 2pm kick-off.

The Spartans, meanwhile, resume their Devon Merit Table campaign in third place behind unbeaten leaders Exmouth and Barnstaple. They travel to ninth placed Cullompton.
