TEIGNMOUTH RFC will be playing for their South West Two future in a win-or-bust showdown against Cullompton at Bitton Park on the last day of their season.
The Teigns’ final chance to dodge the relegation play-offs went out of the window last time out when they lost 46-14 at North Petherton.
It was a straight fight between Petherton and the Teigns who were above and below each other in the table going into the last round of regular season games.
Only bottom side Wellington go down automatically into Western Counties West. Whoever loses in the April 25 play-off will go with them.
The two-week interval between matches is good news for Teignmouth coach Colin Stewart, who was relying on walking wounded to get through the latter stages of the game at Beggars Brook.
“The players showed their usual determination and resilience to play and battle right to the end, epitomised by Pete Bilham scoring off the last play when, physically, he shouldn't have been on the pitch at all,” said Stewart.
“Unfortunately, due to injuries we suffered prior to the break, many players had to adapt, with adjustments leading to quite a few playing in unfamiliar positions.
“This led to us chasing the game in the second half. Along with the injuries suffered, we made too many mistakes, which the opposition capitalised on.
“Now we regroup and get players fit and healthy for the 25th.”
Teignmouth looked to be playing most of the rugby during the opening exchanges and briefly led 7-3 thanks to a Kai Clayton try up the wing that Jack Mayne converted.
Even though the Teigns had a fair share of possession, turning it into points became more challenging as their injury count rose.
Teignmouth fought hard until the final whistle when Bilham charged over and Mayne converted.
Man-of-the-match for Teignmouth went to Alex Ford.
