TEIGNMOUTH AFC secured a first victory of the SW Peninsula League season when they hosted Middlezoy Rovers on Saturday, August 29.

In a narrow affair at Coombe Valley, the Teigns edged it 1-0 to move onto five points for the campaign (1-2-1).

Meanwhile, Newton Abbot Spurs made the trip to Great Torrington to face Torridgeside AFC.

After an underwhelming start to life under Matt Hayden and Sam Biscoe, midweek success over Exeter University was hopefully a sign of things to come and they built on that momentum at Donnacroft Fields.

Tom Burt put in a man of the match performance, scoring twice in a 3-0 win for Spurs with forward Jesse Howe also finding the back of the net.

Burt was sidelined for several months last year following an injury sustained against Spurs, playing for Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police, so it is great to see him back out there and playing at his best.

Elsewhere in the Premier East on the weekend, there were victories for Elburton Villa (who have now won five of five), Stoke Gabriel, and Exeter Uni, whilst Crediton United and Bridport FC shared the spoils.

Perhaps the biggest story from this league though concerns a game that didn’t go ahead between Ilminster Town and Okehampton Argyle.

The South West Peninsula League’s latest statement read: “The East table has been updated this morning to reflect the Ilminster Town v Okehampton Argyle game having been awarded to the non-offending club (Ilminster Town) & a 1-point deduction made to Okehampton Argyle who have also received a charge notice in accordance with relevant rules.

“The league is unable to award goals, so the table shows in affect a 0-0 Home Win for Ilminster Town, a 0-0 Away defeat for Okehampton Argyle, and a 1-point deduction.”

“Player availability” was cited as the reason behind this situation.

Teignmouth go to Bridport night (Tues 1) before hosting Axminster Town on Saturday, whilst Spurs are at home against Bridport themselves on the weekend.
