Stuart Reynolds, of Horse Lane Shaldon, writes:

After four bank holidays in quick succession, with another just around the corner, spare a thought for our hard-pressed traffic wardens – or civil enforcement officers as they prefer to be called these days.

While the rest of us have been trying to relax, enjoying the spring sunshine or celebrating the royal nuptials, these hard-working heroes have been seen working throughout.

Indeed, in Shaldon, people watching the Royal wedding were reassured by the sight of our band of dayglo-clad warriors, enforcing the letter of the parking regulations.

The shops might have been closed, the streets empty of traffic, but woe betide anyone who joined in the chorus of Jerusalem as their 'one hour, no return within two hours' expired.

There are even reports that when the clocks went forward, rather than seeking an extra hour in bed, the wardens were up first thing, as anyone who had forgotten the start of BST can testify.

With another bank holiday on the way, we should all be campaigning to give the team in yellow a well-earned day off.

Double time or time off in lieu is not enough. They really do need to spend more time with their families.
