A TEIGNMOUTH man and his friends raised £1,500 for charity after driving all around the world in a clapped out Skoda Felicia and Nissan Micra.

Richard Matthews, 24, and his pal Max White, from Sussex, blew £225 on the bangers from a scrapyard to see how far they could go.

The distance was much more than they could have ever expected with their wrecks travelling through 46 different countries.

They set sail in August 2016 and returned to the UK last week after an 11-month adventure packed full of highs and lows.

Facebook revelations about their enterprise generated a lot of interest around the globe with people from here, there and everywhere tagging along.

Altogether 26 people in six cars joined the two buddies as they left Europe and headed through Estonia, Russia, Kazakhstan before shipping themselves over to Canada and plodding their way through the US and South America.

Disaster struck at least 70 times along the way with the cars breaking down and sometimes leaving their occupants in rather unpleasant situations.

Worst incidents included being stranded in the Kazakhstan desert after a pothole split the Nissan’s engine and the Skoda blowing a tyre in Serbia, leaving the group stuck for nearly six hours in -6°C temperatures.

Luckily, some helpful locals managed to get the guys back on the road again after welding the engine and providing a spare tyre.

Former postman Richard said: ‘We met some amazing people along the way and the whole adventure was incredible.

‘We picked up more than 100 hitchhikers who found us through Facebook and had lots of cars join us along the way.

‘Several times I wanted to go home when things went really wrong – but we stuck at it.’

He couldn’t say what his favourite country was because there were just too many!

‘But I did enjoy Peru, Canada, Japan and Kazakhstan. The cultures were amazing,’ he said.

Money raised will be sent to Cancer Research UK, although the exact figure raised is still being assessed.

After the worldwide travels the worn out Nissan is having a well-deserved at Richard’s home and the Skoda is parked up at Max’s Sussex base.
