The world’s best Scrabble players are going head-to-head in Torquay from tomorrow at the Mattel® World Scrabble Championships 2018.
Players from more than 30 countries are competing in one of many celebrations of the world-famous board game’s 70th anniversary.
The championship heats will take place at Torquay’s Riviera International Centre from October 23 to 27, while the final two players will battle it out in London on October 28.
The highly-anticipated event will see elite players and talented wordsmiths go head-to-head as they battle against each other for the dream accolade and sought-after title of World Scrabble Champion, in addition to an impressive $20,000 prize pool.
Key players taking part in the tournament include current World Scrabble Champion David Eldar, who will be defending his title.
A total of 35 games will be played across four days with the top eight players returning to play on October 27, in the quarter-finals and semi-finals.
This year, the grand final will take place as part of an immersive, free pop-up Scrabble experience at Westfield, London, which will celebrate the past, present and future of Scrabble. The two finalists will play live in a transparent, cubed tile where one player will lay the highest score and scoop the trophy. Scrabble fans will also get the opportunity to play against a former world champion.
