TEIGNMOUTH’S volunteer beach litter pickers will be meeting at the lighthouse near The Point car park tomorrow at 11.30am for their monthly tidy-up.

The theme is the weather, and wildlife expert Howie Watkins will be on hand to talk about how the seasons affect the wildlife we see on the coast and estuary.

He will also be looking at how weather conditions can be read to predict whether there’s good or bad coming.

‘Forget the supercomputers at the Met Office, all you need is a few choice rhymes, a piece of seaweed and an eye on the sky’ said Howie.

He presented the Weather Show and Essential Guide to Weather for the BBC TV, and is a naturalist with a special interest in how the weather affects animal behaviour.

He has written about how to forecast the weather with your cat (https://goo.gl/tmsEO0).

Cllr Alison Eden who leads the clean-up said: ‘Once again we’ll be out on the beach, enjoying a good stroll and tackling any rubbish we find.

‘The group continues to get out on the last Sunday of the month, attracting a mix of people of all ages. It’s not strenuous, and we have litter picking implements to minimise bending. We also provide bags and disposable gloves, but if you’ve got a pair of gardening gloves bring them along.’

Howie predicted that although the weather would be good, warm clothes and a coat would be a good idea because it was still January. For a more precise prediction he quipped: ‘The night before I will be checking out the piece of seaweed that hangs outside my back door.’

Cllr Eden added: ‘Our weather theme is the latest of our themed litter picks. Over the past few months we’ve focused on seashells, birds of the estuary and fossils. We didn’t set out to make the beach clean into a Sunday science club, it just happened and we’ve kept it up.’
