TEIGNMOUTH'S first Wearable Art show, in which everything was made from recycled materials, has been hailed a great success, writes Lindsey Sill.

Such was the enthusiasm of local artists to take part that the show at the Carlton Theatre last Thursday ran for three-and-a-half hours.

Organiser Liz Lockyear said it was full of intriguing ideas, including a Global Warrior telling us to change our ways, a futuristic insect made from bubblewrap and another which looked like waves breaking on the headland.

Three pieces were presented by Russian Touch, designed by a group which has created more than 120 collections in the 16 years since it was set up. It has been experimenting with knitted video, audio tape, even straw. Twenty thousand sweet wrappers, which took four years to collect, were the basis of the group's Russian Costume.

Closer to home, designers pressed into service 'waste' materials as diverse as polythene, bubble wrap, drink can tabs, beads, fabrics, feathers, even knives.

The show was organised by Trail, the recycled art people, whose summer sculptures have been arousing curiosity and admiration for the past four years.

Trail – Recycled Art in Landscape – says that recycling is fun. When it comes to recycled fashion, the show certainly proved that the possibilities are as limitless as people's imaginations.
