Phil Bullivant, of Gaze Hill, Highweek, Newton Abbot, writes:
The cold snap that hit Newton Abbot almost two weeks ago caused two days of misery and travel disruption for local residents. The predicted snow fall came on Thursday and major roads only became passable on Saturday.
The shelves in the local supermarkets were emptied on the Wednesday as people reacted to the weather warnings.
It is a cause for concern that the supermarket shelves have remained largely bare of milk, bread and meat for up to 10 days after the snow as the large multiples have struggled to bring replacement supplies to our area.
We live in an area with a rich farming heritage yet the basics like milk and bread are not sourced locally and the long supply chains that supermarkets now have has resulted in local shortages.
More must be done to support our local sources and supermarkets must accept their responsibilities to make this happen.
What would have happened if we had a cold, snowy spell that lasted for a week instead of two days?
