AS part of its 50th celebrations, Teignmouth Community School (soon to be known as ‘Teignmouth Primary School’) has been holding a series of special community celebrations, writes Luke Marchant.

‘We Are Teignmouth’ week has focused on the children taking pride in the town and giving back to the community.

Every year group has had a different community project- you may even have seen some in your local area!

► Year 5 tend to St James’ churchyard:

‘It’s like uncovering history,’ remarked one pupil as the children worked at St James’ Churchyard on Bitton Park Road. The children cleared headstones and memorials, removing ivy and weeds, and loved hearing more about the church from Reverend Elizabeth Burren.

► Year 4’s Beach Clean:

Year 4 joined local councillors Andy Henderson, Steve Walsh, David Cox and Chloe Myers to clean Teignmouth Beach. Jackman’s Toy Box even bought the children an ice cream to help celebrate their hard work!

► School poster competition:

Dart and Partners Estate Agents  have kindly displayed some special artwork from the children: the school held a special poster competition about promoting keeping Teignmouth clean and tidy over summer. Mayor Joan Atkins was on hand to judge the winner!

► Year 3 sing at the Alice Cross Centre:

Year 3 visited performed for the Memory Café at the Alice Cross centre. As well as sharing a song they’d written themselves, they also took a chance to meet with people and celebrate their artwork. The biggest musical hit was their performance of ‘Three Little Birds’, which got children and adults alike up and dancing!

► Year 1 and Year 2 ‘Clean Our Patch’:

Teignmouth Primary joined up with the ‘Clean Our Patch’ group (the first Teignmouth school to do so) to pick litter around the local area. The children received 20 free litter-pickers, and are eager to go out again!

► Year 6 celebrate the library

“We love reading at our school!” said one child proudly as Year 6 visited Teignmouth Library. The children produced special sculptures based around the library’s reading challenge theme, and visited the library to enjoy celebrating the new teen reading section!
