A CALL for volunteers to help in getting a food saving initiative up and running in Newton Abbot has gone out.

The town’s first community fridge is being installed outside The Courtenay Centre as part of a community initiative at the end of this month and a small army of volunteers are now needed to help in the running of the scheme that’s received funding from both Devon County Council and Devon Community Foundation.

‘We’ll be shortly completing the work to put the new fridge in place, but in the mean time we’re looking to get together a team of volunteers to help support the scheme,’ said Peta Richard-Jones who works for Newton Abbot Community Interest Company as manager at the centre.

‘The aim of the fridge is to help prevent food wastage, with local shops donating unsold food which would usually go to waste and instead placed in the fridge for people to come and help themselves to,’

There are three roles available to fill; service volunteers, drivers and co-ordinator.

‘We’re very flexible with how regularly people can volunteer,’ continued Peta.

‘And of course the more volunteers we get the easier the scheme is to run.’

Full details of the roles are available on the Courtenay Centre’s Facebook page and anyone wanting further information can contact Peta on [email protected].
