Alan Ashby, of Pellew Way, Teignmouth, writes:

The Vision for Teignmouth: is this a joke, or what?

Why has it taken 15 years to come up with something which would enhance Teignmouth? Why was there only one objection to the selling-off of the Beachcomber?

I'll tell you – because the councils don't listen.

Take, for example, the choice of supermarket.

Brook Street had 285 spaces before the Co-op was built, but we were told that a new car park would be built at Quay Road, but with only 167 spaces. So this shows a loss of more than 120 spaces. Who wants to park there and carry shopping across town?

One of the first meetings I attended with the hotels association at the Beach Hotel in l986 was where Noel Dann (former Teignbridge Council chief planning officer), in his report, outlined the future. Part of what he said was that Teignmouth would become a day visitor centre for coach companies.

While a member of the hotels association, I attended various meetings at Old Forde House, Newton Abbot, where quite a number of suggestions and ideas were put forward but nothing was taken on board. It was said that Dawlish Warren was the number one matter.

As time went on, running our business got harder and harder and parking got more difficult. We decided to call it a day after 18 years.

We remember how many accommodation providers there were in Orchard Gardens when we bought St Mellons.

When we sold to a developer, there was just one. It speaks for itself.THIS AND OTHER LETTERS IN OUR ONLINE EDITION
