A NEWTON Abbot vet is urging new pet owners to be aware of the ongoing cost.
Dr Lennon Foo, founder of Amity Veterinary Care, says many new owners underestimate just how much financial planning is required.
He said: ‘Welcoming a puppy or kitten into your family is incredibly rewarding, but it’s important to understand that pet ownership is a long-term commitment, both emotionally and financially.
‘Planning ahead helps ensure guardians can provide the best possible care throughout their pet's life and avoid difficult decisions when unexpected costs arise.’
Veterinary teams across Devon are seeing growing numbers of pet owners seeking advice on budgeting for pet care, understanding insurance options and preparing for future veterinary costs.
Experts are encouraging prospective owners to consider the long term financial commitment.
Many people focus on the initial purchase or adoption fee, the true cost of raising a pet extends far beyond those first few weeks.
From vaccinations and neutering to insurance, food, preventative healthcare and unexpected emergencies, the costs can quickly add up over a pet's lifetime.
Recent UK research suggests dog owners can expect to spend between £6,200 and £18,800 during their pet's life, while cat owners may spend between £4,000 and £12,000.
Much of this expenditure comes from essential healthcare, nutrition, insurance and emergency veterinary treatment.
For puppies and kittens, the first year of ownership is often one of the most expensive, with costs including: initial vaccinations and health checks, microchipping, flea, tick and worm prevention, neutering or spaying, insurance, training classes for puppies, food, bedding and toys and unexpected illnesses or accidents
Experts recommend that anyone considering a new puppy or kitten should: research the expected lifetime costs of ownership, budget for routine veterinary care and preventative treatments, consider pet insurance from an early age and set aside funds for unexpected emergencies.
