Sean Brogan, of Coombe Vale Road,Teignmouth, writes:
I almost choked on my muesli when I read your report on the proposed closure of Teignmouth Hospital Minor Injuries Unit.
The unedifying sight of local politicians hawking themselves around Teignmouth with a petition against the closure was like asking Dracula to give a blood transfusion. As paid-up members of the Liberal Democrat Party, they are the junior partner of a coalition government which has introduced the Health and Social Care Bill which has led to this crisis in our NHS.
They are in danger of being held up as whited sepulchres when really the honourable thing to have done is to resign.
The vast cuts that have been promised by all the major parties will show, if they get elected, that this closure will be like a Trojan Horse, turning our hospital into a respite care only.
I am equally concerned that some local doctors are willing to serve on this government's Clinical Commissioning Group – these CCGs have already placed a third of contracts into private health care companies. This is a forerunner of making profits out of ill-health.
Citizens of Teignmouth will have the chance in the new year to give a resounding No to this proposal.
In May – see them at the polls!
