MYSTERY surrounds the appearance of a horse head sculpture at a Teignmouth memorial garden.
The white sculpture was left on a wall at Jason’s Garden in East Cliff Walk with no note or information.
The garden was created as a way of commemorating the life of Jason Pope who was 24 and working as a geologist in a diamond mine in Angola when it was raided by guerrillas in 1998.
Jason was one of five people snatched during the armed raid on the American-owned diamond mine. Two Britons and six others were killed.
Jason’s father Alan saw the small plot of land on the cliffs was up for sale and felt creating a garden on the site would be a way to commemorate his son’s life and a way for him to be included in family gatherings.
Over the years, a variety of sculptures have been added to the garden, some donated or on loan from local artists, some by Jason’s family, many of animals.
Jason’s mum Nev said: ‘Thanks from Jason’s Garden for the clay horse’s head found on top of the wall in East Cliff Walk.
‘We love it but equally, if this gift was not to be included with the other sculpture exhibits in the garden, then would the artist, please contact us and we will return it.
‘In any case, we would love to know who made this sculpture and why it was left on the wall.
‘Any information about it would be most welcome.’
