A MAN of 18 was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and a youth on suspicion of assault following an incident in Newton Abbot early on Sunday morning, on May 23.

Both have since been released, pending further inquiries.

A police spokesperson said: ‘Police were called to reports of a road traffic collision in Market Street, Newton Abbot, at around 00.20am on Sunday, May 23, which involved a pedestrian and a car.

‘A man was taken to Derriford Hospital with serious injuries and police cordoned off the scene while investigations were carried out, with road closures remaining in place until soon after 10am.

‘The collision followed an altercation in the street involving the victim and two other males.

‘The victim was struck by a car and the police are trying to establish the circumstances.

‘A man, aged 18, from Newton Abbot, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and has been released on police bail until Friday 18 June, pending further inquiries.

‘A male, aged 16, from Newton Abbot, was arrested on suspicion of assault, occasioning actual bodily harm and has been released under investigation, pending further inquiries.
