A MOMENT’S silence was observed for a homeless Newton Abbot man today (Monday) who died outside the town’s Avenue Methodist Church.

Mark Dagger, in his mid-50s, was found lifeless on Friday morning on the steps of the church which he had made his home over the last year.

The tribute was paid before the start of this morning’s full meeting of Teignbridge Council at Forde House.

Mr Dagger had been befriended by people in Teignmouth and Newton Abbot who frequently helped him out with meals and a friendly chat.

The Rev Jon Doble, minister at the Avenue Methodist Church, said: ‘This event is both sad and tragic - and is a reminder to us of the broken and fragile lives that all too many people lead in the midst of our community.’

He added: ‘Many acts of kindness were made to him. He always appreciated a conversation and he knew that The Avenue was somewhere there would not be immediate rejection.’

Teignbridge councillor David Cox confirmed that many efforts had been made to help Mr Dagger, including those by the local authority. He revealed he had recently been living in Teignmouth’s Jubilee Shelter, but had returned to Newton Abbot.

‘It was his choice to sleep rough on the streets. He admitted he was getting too old for it. I think he was going to turn his life around. Lots of people tried to look after him,’ said Cllr Cox.

Mr Doble said plans were being made for a funeral service at The Avenue.

South Devon coroner Ian Arrow has been informed of the death. There are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances. A post-mortem examination to establish the course of death is due to be held in Torquay tomorrow (Tuesday).

Mr Dagger used to work as a porter at Torbay Hospital. It is understood his father once ran a menswear shop in Newton Abbot. He should not be confused with another local street character known as Mark.
