A GROUP of travellers have set up an illegal camp on playing fields at a popular Newton Abbot park.

Five caravans, and just as many cars, pitched up near the children’s play area at Bakers Park on Wednesday evening.

Officers at Teignbridge Council, which owns and runs the beauty spot, have been made aware of the unwelcome guests.

Nearby residents have been complaining about the travellers keeping them awake at night because of their noisy generators.

It’s understood travellers also set up home at the town’s police dog training ground at Seale-Hayne, just off the Ashburton Road, earlier this week.

Trespassing travellers last visited Bakers Park in July 2018 after smashing down a gate to gain access.

A spokesman for Teignbridge Council confirmed on Thursday that the authority was getting the legal eviction process underway.
